When in Rome

WHEN IN ROME
STARRING: Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel, Angelica Huston, Will Arnett, Jon Heder, Dax Shepard, Alexis Dziena, Kat Micucci and Danny DeVito
WRITTEN BY: David Diamond and David Weissman
DIRECTED BY: Mark Stephen Johnson
Rated: PG - 13
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: 29 January 2010
Review Date: 21 March 2010
Kristen Bell is adorable and Josh Duhamel is a blast and their chemistry together was entertaining; but I wish I'd seen it in a different film. When in Rome is just one more romantic comedy to give me less hope for this genre that's tragically desperate for some creative new ideas.
Kristen Bell is our character of highest interest in the film as Beth. She is a career woman with no time for a man in her life, as a busy art curator for a big museum in New York.
She manages to sneak away for a brief moment to Rome however, for her sister's wedding. At this wedding, she meets the charming man, whom she isn't aware, is no doubt the one of her dreams. Duhamel plays the leading man, Nick.
Despite Nick's more than obvious immediate interest in Beth, she is oblivious to this and finds herself drunk and complaining that no-one will ever love her. She ends up at a majestic touristy water fountain in the streets of Rome, where she removes five coins from its watery temple. The second she does this, five guys immediately fall in love with her. Well four for sure, the other may have already been headed down that road on his own and besides - he threw a poker chip into the fountain rather than a coin, so does this really count? The fifth guy is of course, Nick.
When Beth goes back home to New York, she is soon stalked by all five men, to include Nick, although he does so in a more subtle and somewhat charming fashion. The other four guys yearning for her attention are played by Danny DeVito, Dax Shepard, Jon Heder and Will Arnett.
DeVito plays a sweet famous sausage king; Shepard is a hilarious male model who is absolutely full of himself; Heder is a screw-ball magician who will bother you but make you grin; and Arnett plays a loony Italian artist. All of them grovel over her and naturally, she only has eyes for Nick, but of course can't let him onto that, because -well, the movie would be over, I guess.
I'm not sure why the film needed to have these four psychos following Beth's every move, but on the other hand what would have taken their place? Maybe they added to the film in some obscure way. I do get the feeling that they all had more depth to them than our two main characters, and that is just as ridiculous as the four of them in general. - Craig Whittle
Product Description

But when a charming reporter (Josh Duhamel) pursues her with equal zest, how will she know if his love is the real thing?Bonus includes deleted scenes, bloopers, music videos and more. And as a special incentive to

James Cameron's Avatar Movie Review Blu Ray
TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES AVATAR BLU-RAY DISC AND DVD GLOBAL RELEASE DATES
Avatar is a magical epic of cinematography. It is a story of love, politcal greed and life changing decisions. Never before have I seen computer animation look so real and believable. Avatar takes sci-fi/fantasy movies to an entirely new level much like Star Wars did back in the late 70's. The story revolves around science and human kind's ability to manipulate dna to create an alien race that are controlled by human intelligence. This movie has the ability to entertain people of all ages. If you have yet to experience this gem of a movie, you owe it to yourself to give it a watch. I recommend it with a very enthusiastic two thumbs up!
Found this on Amazon...from MYD Movie Fan! Just an FYI!
***THINGS YOU MUST KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY***
1. A special edition likely including 20-40 minutes of additional footage is already being leaked to media for release later THIS YEAR!
2. No special features. If you are a fan, of all the discs in your collection this is the one you really want the extra stuff. It really should be amazing!
3. No 3D presentation. New technology in TVs is out this year and should enhance the home 3D experience. I don't usually care about 3D at home but things are changing. Be ready!
4. There is also news that the movie itself will be re-released shortly with the 20-40 minutes of additional content I mentioned above. Why buy the Blu if you can see it with additional content and in the best possible 3D at theaters--- then buy the special edition just a few months later?
I have to echo the comments of a previous reviewer. The studios are becoming so brazen. They released this edition and tried to explain the poor accoutrements by saying "they wanted to save all the space on the disc for the best possible presentation". Are you kidding me? Bust out the extra discs already! Offering this bare bones BR right before re-releasing the movie with additional footage was also a classless act that spits in consumer's faces. Just rent the movie or see the enhanced version in theaters. It will tide you over until the Special Edition comes out.
Lastly, there are plenty of people adding comments that you shouldn't wait for 3D because the home experience with 3D is lack luster or most people don't have the new 3D TVs. That's partly true, however...
IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT 3D! The lack of additional storyline, missing special features and blatent disregard for consumers (in an economic downturn) are what make this a bad deal. There is new home theater technology out this year that should enhance the home 3D experience. Your home theater will catch up. People who are excited about this movie should be standing together against a poor release offering, especially when there are terrific alternatives to hold us over.
Wait a few months and get a much superior release for similar money.

The Great Mouse Detective DVD review!
Basil isn't the most sympathetic of heroes--he seems to have most of his human model's weaknesses (arrogance, vanity, and an occasional tendency to self-pity not the least) and few of his virtues (except for courage). But he's also brilliant, and with Dawson's stolid backing he follows the clues to an exciting climax that finds him pursuing Ratigan through the gears and escapements of the Big Ben clock and very nearly re-enacting (or perhaps more accurately anticipating) Holmes's plunge off the Reichenbach Falls. Ratigan himself is a smooth yet scary villain, like so many of Disney's bad guys, and is wonderfully voiced by horrormeister Vincent Price. (His henchbat, Fidget, may be even scarier, especially when he first bursts through the Flavershams' window.) He also stoutly denies that he's a rat, even though he obviously is. Kids may well want to find out more about Arthur Conan Doyle's tales after watching this movie, and adults familiar with them will enjoy picking up on the similarities between the two. CJ
From the creators of The Princess and the Frog and The Little Mermaid comes the story of a clever little hero on a great big adventure. Join the Sherlock Holmes of Mousedom on a heroic journey unraveling clues through London. If you like Sherlock Holmes, you'll love The Great Mouse Detective. When the diabolical Professor Ratigan kidnaps the city's master toymaker, the brilliant Basil of Baker Street and his trusted sidekick Dawson set off to track down Basil's lifelong nemesis. Little do they know that the evil rat's trail leads all the way to The Queen at Buckingham Palace! Get on the case with Basil, the master of disguise, as he tries to elude the ultimate rattrap and foil the perfect crime. Secrets of the Mountain Sneak Peak
“Secrets of the Mountain” is a new family movie airing tomorrow night on NBC, brought to you by Walmart and P&G. All the the hype of this movie is about how families can watch it together. Yep, a family movie..something safe and exciting for our kids to watch.
The movie stars Paige Turco as Dana James, a single Mom who feels her kids are pulling away from her and each other. When she gets a letter from an attorney offering to buy a mountain property she inherited, she rallies the kids to take the road trip with her to see what shape the house is in. When they arrive, they find surprises around every corner. Soon, the whole James family is caught up in an ancient secret, a treasure hunt, and a treacherous journey that will teach them to work with each other instead of against each other. It kind of reminds me of “National Treasure” but with kids. Other stars include Barry Bostwick and Shawn Christian.
Plot synopsis:
Somewhere between the demands of her career, her ex’s wedding and her kids’ busy schedules, Dana James is noticing her tight-knit family starting to unravel. An unexpected offer to purchase her family’s mountain property sets up a weekend road trip, which she hopes will bring her family back together. But when they arrive, they quickly learn that the mountain is much more than it seems. An ancient secret and a treacherous quest will test the family like never before. It’s an edge-of the-seat thriller that reminds us that when times are tough, families don’t run away from problems – they run back to each other.
“Secrets of the Mountain” airs on NBC tomorrow, April 16th, at 8pm EST, 7pm CT. The “Secrets of the Mountain” trailer is on YouTube. You’ll be able to buy the DVD with a bonus CD soundtrack on the 17th, or preorder it from walmart.com here.

The Princess and the Frog on Blu Ray
I love all of the Disney Movies and I grew up watching the classics, like Snow White
I would day dream about becoming a Princess and marrying a handsome Prince...and now I watch my daughter Nevaeh do the same thing. We dress Nevaeh up like her favorite Princess with all of the glitz and glam as the ones on the screen!
Disney Princess debuted on DVD and Blu-Ray in The Princess and the Frog
This movie had a new first for Disney - the first African American princess. Set in New Orleans, the story follows Tiana, a hard-working woman from a working-class family who has spent her life saving and working towards her dream of owning her own restaurant.I love these movies that have good values and story lines and this movie does.
Tiana is focused on her goal with no dreams of having a prince come rescue her and give her all she's ever dreamed of. So when a penniless, happy-go-lucky prince Prince Naveen comes to town looking for a wife, she doesn't give him a second thought. This is the part Nevaeh loves because she pretends Prince Naveen is her little friend Cisco who she has a crush on. So cute.
Now we don't want to tell you everything that happens...so here are a few more details.
Included throughout is a wonderful musical movie, filled with lots of traditional New Orleans jazz music that will make you and your kids happy. My kids really enjoyed this movie and both gave it a thumbs up. I can tell you that the message in this movie will teach your kids that HARD WORK can make your dreams come true. My hubby and I enjoyed this movie also....hubby thought it was a little long. The story is original and the characters have very interesting personalities that your children can relate to.
BONUS FEATURES: Deleted scenes, a look at making the movie and a game.
The Princess and the Frog is available on DVD and on Blu-Ray DVD combo pack that has a digital copy of the movie for your computer. This movie is a must for your collection!

BARBIE DVD! SING ALONG WITH BARBIE!
Nevaeh was so happy to get to review the Sing along with Barbie DVD. Neve loves Barbie so anything that has Barbie on it is a winner in her eyes! We think this DVD is wonderful for young kids to watch...you may want your child to be of reading age to be able to sing along with the DVD. I found that Nevaeh was frustrated because she could not read the words. Nevaeh and I agreed that she would be able to watch the DVD and learn the songs as if she was listening to the radio and that seemed to do the trick. So really enjoyed the DVD and only wishes she knew how to read since the words are displayed at the bottom of the page. The graphics and the songs are wonderful and you will not be disappointed.Featuring 12 songs from popular Barbie movies of the past, the DVD has easy-to-follow, on-screen lyrics, making it possible for children to take part in performing favorite Barbie movie songs. Whether your child likes "All for One" from Barbie & the Three Musketeers or "I Am a Girl Like You" from Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper, they will find extended versions of many Barbie favorites to turn into family room performances.
Parents with Style is happy to recommend this DVD to our readers!

“I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Mattel. In addition, I received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate. These are my own honest opinions of this DVD, thanks!”

GLEE

Few shows bottle pure delight like Glee, a Fox TV series about the ups and downs of a high school glee club, or show choir. The show lures you in with its musical numbers, a mix of classic rock and Broadway show tunes performed by a cast of marvelous singers and dancers--but what keeps you watching are the wonderful characters, ranging from Rachel (Lea Michelle), whose self-obsession is as uninhibited as it is annoying; to Emma (Jayma Mays), a germ-phobic guidance counselor hopelessly in love with a married teacher; to Kurt (Chris Colfer), a cherubic young gay man who discovers he's got a fantastic football kick. The center of the show is Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), the earnest Spanish teacher of McKinley High School, who's determined to guide the glee club to victory at a national competition. He sees this collection of overemotional misfits as heroic, but they're looked down on as losers by the rest of the school--especially Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Best In Show), the ruthless cheerleading coach who will stop at nothing to destroy the glee club before they can take even a fraction of her extravagant budget. Glee fuses adolescent soap opera, the comic pettiness of academic politics, and exuberant song and dance. (While it would be better if the songs weren't so glossily produced, it's impossible to deny the pep and talent of these young performers.) Somehow, the characters manage to be cartoonish yet multidimensional; even the nicest characters are capable of being jerks and the most manipulative have moments of sympathy or grace. For example, Will's wife, Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig), fakes a pregnancy because she's afraid Will is about to leave her for Emma--but as absurd as this scenario is, it's carefully grounded in enough moments of desperate yearning that it becomes completely compelling… particularly when Terri seizes on the unwanted pregnancy of lead cheerleader Quinn (Dianna Agron) as the solution to her problem. Throw in vividly colored costume designs and blisteringly funny rants from Sue, and it's easy to see why Glee became an unexpected hit. Volume One: The Road to Sectionals collects the first 13 episodes, along with a smattering of extras that range from charming (the principal leads the audience on a tour through the school) to inane (bland factoids about the actors' favorite colors). --Bret Fetzer
An fantastic joy, it is one of best TV series in years. Winning all the awards too. .
I am a mom, wife, and I work full-time, so it is not very often that I find a TV show that I plan my schedule around. I TIVO every episode and still plan to buy the soundtracks and full season sets. The chemistry within the cast is incredible, and I recommend the show to everyone I see. I have never seen so much talent. Its a fun light-hearted show that will give you a good night of television or make a great movie night.

The Boys are Back DVD review!!

For my movie night my pick was.........THE BOYS ARE BACK
The Boys are Back came to DVD January 26th and we finally had a chance to watch it. Once the kids went to bed hubby and myself settled in for the movie. I am a huge Clive Owen fan, so I was pretty excited about seeing him play a single father. What I love about this movie is that it’s based on a true There is nothing better then watching a movie based on a true story.
The Boys are Back didn’t over dramatize the movie. It showed the raw story of what a dad who doesn’t know his children has to go through after his wife dies. I can't even imagine all of the struggles and raw feelings one would go through after losing a spouse.
Not only did the movie show what a new single dad goes through, but also what it meant to a young boy to lose his mom and what a teenage son feels like knowing that his dad left him when he was only 6. It breaks my heart and it is one of my biggest fears in life...leaving my babies too early in life.
.The ending is wonderful and it ties the whole movie together.
The Boys are Back teaches about the emotions and relationships we hold in life and it will make you think twice about your own life.
The movie had sad parts and funny parts that will make you laugh.
PWS recommends this movie for your next movie night.

Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side.

Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side
While watching the first Star Wars parody, Blue Harvest, from the creators of Family Guy, I was struck by the originality of the "episode" (competition with Robot Chicken aside!). Just seeing Peter as Han Solo, Brian as Chewbacca, Quagmire as C3PO, and Cleveland as R2-D2, among others, was enough to bring a smile to my face. It was one thing to develop those characters on a weekly TV series, but a whole different thing entirely to take that character development and use it to make fun (and pay tribute to) the first Star Wars film.
In this second spoof, "Something, Something, Something, Dark Side", the Family Guy team sends-up The Empire Strikes Back. Since that first shock-value of seeing all our favorite characters in the Star Wars universe is gone, it is more up to the jokes than ever, as sight gags just weren't going to cut it anymore. With that being said, this entry into the FG cannon performs about as well as anything else...some jokes are brutally offensive, others fall completely flat, and still others are so funny that you'll be chuckling out loud and almost miss the next one! Really, the success of the TV show stems from the fact that creator Seth McFarlane and Co. know no bounds in terms of poking fun at anything and everything, and that is once again the case here.
Basically, this was another funny little entry into the FG universe (literally!) that does pretty much what it is supposed to do. Fans of the show will eat it up (awkward moments and all), while non-fans will probably find it offensive and turn it off. ZACH
Another bonus to picking Something Something Something Dark Side up is that there are a few sweet special features to check out. Special features means happy days!
SPECIAL FEATURES
Family Guy Fact-Ups – This is a very cool little special feature. You can watch the movie along with seeing pop ups that offer even more humor.
The Dark Side of Poster Art – Another entertaining look into one element of a film’s production we rarely get a look at: the design and creation of the poster. They even have the original designer of the poster from The Empire Strikes Back, Roger Kastel, talking about the new Family Guy version of his poster.
Animatic Scene-To-Scene – Gives you a look at the story boards.
Family Guy – Something Something Something Dark Side Acts 1 & 2 Table Read – .. You can watch the whole cast read out the first and second acts in a nice and crowded room.
Audio Commentary– Feature-length audio commentary with Seth MacFarlane, Mark Hentemann, David A. Goodman, Kirker Butler, Dominic Polcino, and Seth Green. Expect lots of laughs from them and you, as well as some tidbits about the film and nonsensical ramblings.
Digital Copy– There’s also a separate disc that has a digital copy of the movie include, which you can transfer to your computer and also to a portable device, like an iPod touch.
We enjoyed this movie and you will also.

Mickey's Magical Christmas

I have to admit, the video is fun. Like all Disney animated
adventures the graphics are excellent and it is nice to see the
'House of Mouse' gang together. However, the one and only real
complaint is that the Disney advertising machine has once again
pulled the wool over the eyes of the buying public. True, there
is a lot of the mouse gang available, but the majority of the
movie consists of an old Pluto/Chip n' Dale cartoon and the more
recent 'Mickey's Christmas Carol'. For anyone who has a collection of Disney animation, and especially the Christmas
releases, disappointment will follow purchase. The T.V. ads are
deceptive and the write up on back of the VHS and DVD does not
mention that it is basically a reprint. For those who do not own a great deal of Disney animation or the Christmas Carol starring Mickey and Uncle Scrooge, it will be a treat. For those
who do, beware. -Ron
